No national studies have been conducted regarding the prevalence of dyslexia among prisoners, but a study of Texas prisoners in 2000 found that 48 percent were dyslexic and two-thirds struggled with reading comprehension.
We also know that dyslexia can be inherited which puts the children of our inmates at high risk for dyslexia.
Reading is an essential part of life, from reading a job application, to executing work duties and it is a necessary skill for daily activities. In order for an individual with dyslexia to thrive an accurate diagnosis is required. Proper support can significantly improve reading, spelling and writing ability and to provide strategies to help a dyslexic person cope well at home, school, or at work.
With appropriate support dyslexics can achieve great success. People with dyslexia often have great memories and can rely their memories to excel. They are also often very good at reading people, and have great people skills. Strengths include visual thinking, rapid problem solving, creative thinking, verbal articulation and many are spatially talented. Great success has been obtained in careers that include acting, art, cooking, design, architecture, medicine, physics, engineering and politics. Famous individuals reported to have dyslexia and have achieved great success and changed the world include CEOs, entertainers, politicians, athletes, and scientists.
